Simplur is an app to promote safety and prevent overdoses at raves and music festivals

Research Goals + Methods
Research Goals
-
What do attendees value the most?
-
Can preaching sobriety prevent overdoses at raves and music festivals?
-
How can I better the rave and music festival experience?
Research Methods
-
Contextual Inquiry + Survey – I interviewed 18-25yr olds who attend raves often and have experience in social drug use. When asked what makes raves fun, 90% mentioned being with great friends makes for an amazing night
-
Mental Model – I learned that a key feature for the app should be a potential overdose detection that can automatically alert emergency services when necessary.
-
Customer Journey + Experience Map – From my interviews, everyone experienced getting lost from their group at least once. This was a key problem I wanted to solve.

Jobs to be Done
From the research, I narrowed down the common concerns and thought patterns
Main Jobs: Functional
"When I'm really high and in the middle of a mosh pit, I want to stay with my friends so I don't do anything I'd regret."
Main Jobs: Emotional
"When I'm partying, I want to make sure my friends are okay so I can have a peace of mind and enjoy the moment."
Secondary Jobs: Functional
"When I need to go to the bathroom I want to be able to find my friends again"
Secondary Jobs: Emotional
"When I'm at a rave, I don't want to worry about overdosing so i can have the most uplifting experience"

What I learned...
-
Staying with your friend group at these events can be tough - now imagine you're in the middle of a huge crowd and one person needs the bathroom while another wants to move closer to the stage

-
Having a trusting friend be aware as you take drugs/alcohol can help prepare them to act quickly in case of an emergency

-
Despite drugs being forbidden at these festivals, they are still prevalent and causing overdoses that could be prevented
Problems to solve
1. Losing Friends
Some festivals have over 10,000 attendees, a very large campground and 5+ stages. Especially when your favourite act is preforming, It's easy to get lost in the hyped up crowd.
2. Drug Overdoses
In 2018, Kelowna's largest music festival, Center of Gravity had 17 reported overdoses at the event and announced it will not return.
